Crosswind landings are where a normal approach can suddenly feel messy. The runway is straight ahead, the aircraft is pointing somewhere else, and the last few seconds can turn into a fight between drift, rudder, aileron, and nerves.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, crosswinds are also one of the best ways to expose weak landing habits. A touchdown can feel soft, but if you arrive sideways, drift off the centreline, float long, or overcorrect during rollout, the landing will not look clean in the data.

This guide explains the two main crosswind landing techniques, when to use them, and how to practise them in MSFS 2024 without turning every final approach into a panic workout.


What makes a crosswind landing difficult?

A crosswind pushes the aircraft sideways across the ground track. If you do nothing, the aircraft will drift away from the runway centreline even if the nose looks close to the runway heading.

To land well, you need to manage three things at once:

  • Keep the aircraft tracking down the runway centreline
  • Touch down with the wheels aligned reasonably close to the runway direction
  • Stay under control after touchdown during the rollout

That last point matters more than many sim pilots expect. A crosswind landing is not finished when the wheels touch. If you let the aircraft weathervane, skid, drift, or snake across the runway after touchdown, the landing will still look untidy.


The crab method

The crab method means pointing the aircraft slightly into wind during final approach. The nose is not aligned with the runway, but the aircraft's ground track follows the runway centreline.

If the wind is from the left, the aircraft points slightly left of the runway. If the wind is from the right, it points slightly right. You are using heading to cancel the sideways drift.

This is usually the easiest way to fly the approach because the wings stay level and the aircraft feels stable.

The tricky part is the touchdown. If you land while still fully crabbed, the wheels touch while the aircraft is not aligned with the runway. That can create a sideways load, a skip, or an ugly drift as the aircraft straightens out.

In MSFS 2024, the crab method works best when you de-crab before touchdown:

  • Fly the approach crabbed into wind
  • In the flare, use rudder to align the nose with the runway
  • Add a small amount of into-wind aileron to stop drift returning
  • Touch down aligned and keep correcting through the rollout

Do not stamp on the rudder at the last second. Start gently as the runway begins to fill the windscreen, then refine the correction as the aircraft settles.


The sideslip or wing-low method

The sideslip method uses bank and rudder together. You lower the upwind wing slightly, then use opposite rudder to keep the nose aligned with the runway.

If the wind is from the left, lower the left wing a little and use right rudder to keep the nose straight. If the wind is from the right, lower the right wing and use left rudder.

This method has one big advantage: the aircraft can already be aligned before touchdown. You are not waiting until the flare to remove the crab.

It also has a challenge: it requires more coordinated control. Too much bank and you drift upwind. Too much rudder and you yaw across the runway. Not enough aileron and the crosswind pushes you away from centreline.

In MSFS, this method is excellent practice because it teaches you to separate two jobs:

  • Aileron controls drift across the runway
  • Rudder controls where the nose points

That sentence is worth remembering. If you are drifting left or right, fix it mostly with aileron. If the nose is not aligned, fix it mostly with rudder.


Crab vs sideslip: which should you use in MSFS 2024?

For most sim pilots, the best answer is both.

Use a crab on most of final because it is stable and easy to judge. Then transition into a small sideslip in the flare so the aircraft touches down aligned with the runway.

That hybrid technique works well for many aircraft:

  • Crab during final approach
  • De-crab with rudder in the flare
  • Hold into-wind aileron as you touch down
  • Keep increasing aileron into wind as the aircraft slows

The stronger the wind, the more important the rollout becomes. As speed decays, flight controls become less effective, so you often need more aileron input after touchdown, not less.

  • Rollout control after the wheels are down
  • Whether the landing stayed on the runway and avoided a crash or void condition

That is why a controlled crosswind landing often scores better than a soft but sideways one. If you float long while trying to make the touchdown gentle, or if you land crabbed and slide across the centreline, you may give away more points than you saved with a lower FPM.

Practical crosswind landing steps

Here is a simple flow you can use in MSFS 2024:

  1. On final, establish a stable speed and descent rate before worrying about perfection.
  2. Crab into wind enough to stop sideways drift.
  3. Keep your eyes looking down the runway, not just at the touchdown point.
  4. In the flare, use rudder to align the nose with the runway.
  5. Add aileron into wind to prevent drift.
  6. Touch down on the upwind main wheel first if the crosswind is strong.
  7. Keep rudder active after touchdown.
  8. Increase aileron into wind as the aircraft slows.

If the aircraft is drifting, ballooning, or running out of runway, go around. A go-around is not a failed landing. It is a good decision made early enough.


Common mistakes

Landing while still crabbed

A little crab at touchdown may be normal in larger aircraft, but in light aircraft it often creates a sideways touchdown. In the sim, it can show up as a bounce, a sudden swing, or an ugly rollout.

Overusing rudder

Rudder aligns the nose. It is not the main tool for stopping drift across the runway. If you try to fix everything with rudder, you will often start weaving.

Forgetting aileron after touchdown

A lot of pilots neutralise the controls after touchdown. In a crosswind, that lets the wind take over. Keep aileron into wind and increase it as you slow down.

Chasing a soft touchdown at all costs

A soft touchdown is nice, but not if it happens halfway down the runway or with the aircraft drifting sideways. Aim for a controlled touchdown in the correct zone first.


Good airports for crosswind practice

Pick airports with long runways at first, then move to shorter or narrower runways once you can stay controlled.
